New Calbayog airport to boost economy, says DOTr chief

CATBALOGAN CITY, May 6 (PIA) -- The new Calbayog City Airport will boost the economy of the City and province as said by Department of Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade during its inauguration on May 5.

The Secretary toured and unveiled the Calbayog City Airport Marker together with Office of the PresidentialAdviser to the Visayas Michael Dino, Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines Director General Jim Sydiongco, Governor Reynold Michael Tan, Vice Governor Angelica Teodoro, Samar 1st District Representative Edgar Mary Sarmiento, An Waray Representative Bem Noel, and Calbayog Mayor Diego Rivera .

The team proceeded to inspect the facilities and amenities of the airport, where Sec. Tugade proudly showed to his company the work that has been done including the improvements made.

The Secretary, in his message, thanked the President for having the Calbayog airport as among the priority projects.

He also thanked Samar 1st District representative Edgar Mary Sarmiento, Chairman of Transportation Committee of the House of Representatives saying, "The Congressman pushed for this project to materialize."

"We plant for the future of Samar, for the future of Calbayog. We made this airport so that when the need arises and during the new normal, the facility is already available for business, transportation and economic prosperity," Sec. Tugade said.

Meanwhile, the Office of the Presidential Adviser for the Visayas Sec. Michael Lloyd Dino who was also present during the inauguration said, "Now with a higher capacity, the airport's newly improved terminal building can accommodate an increase in passenger traffic. The expansion of the runway and the airport facilities will also enable the airport to accept bigger planes. Bigger and better airport facilities give more potential for tourism, which could also mean an increased economic viability for the region."

"I'm sure with the much-improved Calbayog airport, it will offer nothing short, but comfort and efficiency to the traveling public, and will surely bring in more tourists and boost the economy of Calbayog and the rest of the Samar Province," he added.

Moreover, CAAP Director General Jim Sydiongco shared that more infrastructure developments are programmed for Calbayog Airport.

"To support Samar's growth, further construction projects at the Calbayog Airport such as the construction of administration building, two (2) bay CFR with access road, and control tower are also expected to be completed by the end of the year," the director quipped.

On the other hand, Samar 1st District Representative Edgar Mary Sarmiento, expressed his elation upon witnessing the inauguration of the airport to which he described as a dream come true.

"Now, I watch it unfold and become a reality before my eyes - ready to be of service to my beloved Samarnons and to all Filipinos and foreigners who will soon finally see the beauty of Stunning Samar," he said.

"The project is a proof that good governance that is being focused on people first, will always bear good fruit," Rep. Sarmiento added.

Governor Reynolds Tan, who was also present in the event, shared his plans to put up the local products of Samar inside the airport.

"I asked Sec. Tugade how we can put our local products here, to which Sec. Tugade assured that a space for such will be provided."

"This will be an avenue to showcase our products here in Samar. Through the Secret Kitchens of Samar, our products will be improved according to international standards, to further introduce Samar as a premier destination," the governor said.

The airport, once fully operational, can accommodate 450 passengers from its previous 76 count. Its maiden flight on May 5, carried 22 adults and 1 infant for the Manila-Calbayog route, while the Calbayog-Manila flight carried 22 passengers. (ldl/gmt/PIA-Samar)
