Rugby Australia chairperson Hamish McLennan has brought up the idea of his country hosting a "mini World Cup" in July.

"We are still expecting the Rugby Championship to go ahead this year but perhaps we can add to it and create a 'mini World Cup," McLennan told the Financial Times.

"We have the French in July but if anyone else wants to come out, great. We have a significant British and Irish population here and South Africans.

"We are open to creating a new tournament and keeping the international calendar going."

It is understood that the proposed tournament could run in parallel with the Rugby Championship and involve any number of teams from Europe.

Australia hosted last year's Rugby Championship which was renamed to Tri-Nations after world champions South Africa pulled out.

The Springboks are due to host the British & Irish Lions in July this year but it's uncertain if the tour will go ahead due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Some reports have indicated that the tour could be delayed until 2022 or even moved to the United Kingdom.
